UNEP-DHI co-hosted Resilient Cities 2015 Conference

UNEP-DHI partnered with Local Governments for Sustainability (ICLEI) European Secretariat to host a workshop on green infrastructure for urban flood mitigation at the Resilient Cities Conference in Bonn, Germany, on Tuesday, 9 June 2015.

The workshop focused on ways and means to arrive at rational decisions regarding green infrastructure solutions for resilient urban water systems, with a focus on opportunities in the use of ecosystem-based solutions.

Maija Bertule from UNEP-DHI presented lessons from the Green Infrastructure Guide for Water Management. This was accompanied by on-the-ground green infrastructure implementation case study presentations from The Nature Conservancy for Howard Beach (New York, United States) and the City of Essen (Germany). Participants learned about:

  • different criteria to assess green – or gray-green – infrastructure solutions
  • practical tools for science-based decision-making under uncertainty
  • real-life opportunities and challenges experienced in green Infrastructure planning and implementation

Workshop presentations were followed by lively group discussions, highlighting the various challenges that participants see and have faced in furthering the green infrastructure approaches in cities.
