Our clients project gets 'highly commended' at Engineers Australia 2012

We would like to congratulate AECOM and the Department of Transport and Main Roads (QLD) for their highly commended project ‘Fitzroy river floodplain and road planning study’ at the recent 2012 Queensland Engineering Excellence Awards.

We would like to congratulate AECOM and the Department of Transport and Main Roads (QLD) for their highly commended project ‘Fitzroy river floodplain and road planning study’ at the recent 2012 Queensland Engineering Excellence Awards.

This awarded project successfully investigated the long term solutions for the road and rail transport development in the floodplain area surrounding Rockhampton city. The study specifically addressed issues relating to flood immunity and transport capacity in the region.

The project required an innovative application of DHI’s MIKE FLOOD Flexible Mesh software to floodplain hydraulics. We assisted AECOM in development of a model that could accurately assess the potential flood impact of all the different projected alignment options.

One of the challenges overcome using the Flexible Mesh system was adequate coverage of the very large floodplain area while maintaining the required level of detail at key locations, and achieving reasonable model simulation times.

We are proud to have been associated with this award winning project in a supporting role, and note the model will continue to be an invaluable tool for the Department of Transport and Main Roads to use on projects within the Fitzroy River Flood Plain.
