ENVIRONMENTAL RISK ASSESSMENT OF CHEMICALS

Introduction to EUSES

This one-day course is an introduction to EUSES and will guide you through the process of making environmental risk assessments of chemicals and biocides.
After the course you know how to use emission scenario documents together with EUSES for your dossiers.

EUSES - or the European Union System for the Evaluation of Substances - has been developed to support the risk assessment of new and existing substances
and biocides as laid down in European legislation and the EU Technical Guidance Documents. EUSES is a tool for calculation of the Predicted Environmental Concentration (PEC) and the Predicted No-Effect Concentration (PNEC) to assess risks to the environment.

The course will take you through the process of making environmental risk assessments step-by-step.

COURSE TOPICS

  • The basics of EUSES.
  • Collection, interpretation and use of physico-chemical data and fate data.
  • Calculation of the emission of chemicals or biocides into the environment. Examples from emission scenario documents and how these have been implemented by EUSES will be given.
  • Calculation of PEC values by EUSES.
  • Collection and interpretation of ecotoxicological input data, including how ecotoxicity data are generated and how you select the right endpoint for your assessment. You will also be introduced to the general principles applied for calculating the PNECs.
  • Risk assessment of chemicals or biocides comparing PEC and PNEC values.
  • Examples on how to improve the risk assessment will be given.
  • Hands-on exercises.

TARGET GROUP AND PREREQUISITES

This training course is for everyone working with environmental risk assessments or registration of chemicals or biocidal products. No prerequisites are required to attend the course. However, it is an advantage to have some general knowledge of chemistry and ecotoxicology. Tailor-made courses addressing particular needs can be arranged on request.
