A new dynamic ecological model, a prediction tool for decision makers

In our research centre in Singapore, we are working together with a group of international experts in plankton ecology and numerical modelling. The aim of the project: to develop a dynamic ecological model for tropical climates, that can be efficiently used as a prediction tool for decision makers.

One of our key areas of excellence is the integration of knowledge about ecosystem functioning into ecological models. We constantly invest our Research & Development (R&D) efforts in such projects, with a view to developing state-of-the-art tools to support the management of:

  • freshwater reservoirs
  • aquaculture ponds
  • coastal or ocean water bodies (such as recreational areas, harbours and so on)

These integrated MIKE by DHI models can be used as tools challenged by different scenarios. They can also be combined with online monitoring systems to provide predictions, based on real-time measurements.

Our work on plankton ecology and numerical modelling is carried out within the framework of three R&D projects (AMEWS, MADE IN PLANKTON and DEN-SELECT). Each of these partly aims at describing ecological processes in water bodies. Our work ranges from sampling and laboratory analysis of plankton communities to the experimental measurements of vital rates. The latter includes primary production responses to light conditions as well as grazing rates of micro-zooplankton and meso-zooplankton on smaller prey.

By applying this integrated monitoring-modelling approach, we will be able to provide predictive ecological modelling of the highest standards. We aim to offer our clients only the best, most cost-effective, and fully customised solutions to any ecological problem within water environments.
